photography

the word “photography” was created from the greek roots φωτός (phōtos), genitive of φῶς (phōs), “light” and γραφή (graphé) “representation by means of lines” or “drawing”, together meaning “drawing with light“.

camera obscura

from latin, meaning “dark room”: camera “chamber or room” and obscura “dark”, also referred to as pinhole image.

camera obscura is the natural optical phenomenon that occurs when an image of a scene at the other side of a screen is projected through a small hole in that screen as a reversed and inverted image (left to right and upside down) on a surface opposite to the opening.
